Agree. We must win over intellectuals like these.

[1] On January 25, 1970, Kang Sheng, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political
Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, relayed a letter from Chen Yuan, former president of
Beijing Normal University, to Mao Zedong. He wrote that Chen Yuan's former secretary and
waiter had returned to the university to participate in the Cultural Revolution, leaving Chen
without a caregiver. After consultation with the university, Chen's secretary and waiter had
been assigned back to Chen's place. Chen, therefore, wrote to express his gratitude for the
Party Central Committee's concern for him. Chen wanted to donate his books and 40,000
yuan in royalties to the Party. We exchanged views at a Politburo meeting and decided to
write a letter to encourage his spirit. We also explained that the Beijing Library was currently
undergoing a struggle, criticism, and transformation campaign, and that it would be best for
his books and documents to remain in his own care for the time being. We also suggested
that he be persuaded to keep his royalties to support his livelihood. Mao Zedong, after
reading the letter, wrote this comment.
