There is a note [2] in it, asking Comrade Huang Yongsheng [3] to handle it.
All veteran comrades and their families associated with the February Countercurrent should
not be criticized; instead, good relations should be maintained.
Mao Zedong
January 3

[1] The so-called "February Countercurrent" refers to the righteous struggle waged around
February 1967 by leading comrades of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee
and the Central Military Commission, including Tan Zhenlin, Chen Yi, Ye Jianying, Li Fuchun,
Li Xiannian, and Xu Xiangqian. At several meetings (primarily the February Politburo meeting
held in the Huairen Hall of Zhongnanhai and the earlier meeting of the Central Military
Commission at the Jingxi Hotel), they, representing the will of the vast majority of Party
members and the people, strongly criticized the erroneous practices of the "Cultural
Revolution" and waged a resolute struggle against the Lin Biao and Jiang Qing gangs. After
the Lin Biao counter-revolutionary clique was crushed, on November 14, 1971, Mao Zedong,
while meeting with participants at the Chengdu regional symposium, stated: "Now that this
matter has been clarified, there's no need to talk about the 'February Countercurrent'
anymore." Following the crushing of the Jiang Qing counter-revolutionary clique, the CPC
Central Committee decided to rehabilitate the "February Countercurrent."
[2] This comment appears on a report submitted by the Central Military Commission's Office
on December 26, 1968, that reflected the current situation of Xu Xiangqian (then Vice
Chairman of the Central Military Commission).
[3] Huang Yongsheng was then the head of the working group of the Central Military
Commission of the Communist Party of China and the chief of the general staff of the
People's Liberation Army.
