Comments on Two Briefing Reports on the Forums Held by the PLA Newspaper Office
(August 13, 1968)

The opinions raised at these two forums contain many points worthy of attention and should be adopted. Their views are simply that the newspaper should not be run behind closed doors but should face the masses, maintain a broad orientation, and be fresh and lively.

[I] Refers to the two briefing reports published in *Military Newspaper Life*, Issue No. 292, compiled by the PLA Newspaper Office’s General Editorial Department on August 10, 1968: *Opinions from Representatives of Ten Army Units on How to Run the "PLA Daily" Well* and *Hopes of Coastal and Border Defense Officers and Soldiers for Running the Newspaper Well*. These reports respectively covered the forum held by the PLA Newspaper Office on July 28, 1968, inviting representatives from ten army units to discuss how to improve the *PLA Daily* in the future, and the forum held on August 2, 1968, inviting comrades from the Tibet Military Region, Fuzhou Military Region, and the Navy to discuss the same topic.

[I] In *Opinions from Representatives of Ten Army Units on How to Run the "PLA Daily" Well*, one point stated: "We hope to quickly restore the 'Ideological Front.'" Under the four characters "Ideological Front," Mao Zedong drew a line and wrote this comment. "Ideological Front" was a column originally featured in the *PLA Daily*, which was later discontinued. The four characters "Ideological Front" were inscribed by Mao Zedong.

[2] In *Opinions from Representatives of Ten Army Units on How to Run the "PLA Daily" Well*, two points stated: "Reporters rarely go to the frontlines of the 'Three Supports' and 'Two Armies'" and "It is very difficult to find people at the *PLA Daily*." Under both points, Mao Zedong drew lines and wrote this comment.
