In the third paragraph of the editorial, Chairman Mao specifically re-cited the following two passages from his report at the Sixth Plenary Session of the Sixth Central Committee of the CPC in October 1938: “What are the characteristics of the current movement? What are its regularities? How should this movement be guided? These are all practical questions.” “As the movement develops, new things constantly emerge; they are endless. To study the movement in its entirety and in its development is a major task to which we must always pay close attention.”

(See “The Position of the Chinese Communist Party in the National War,” Selected Works of Mao Zedong, Volume II, Second Edition, p. 523.)

In the same paragraph, after the phrase “closely follow Chairman Mao’s strategic deployment,” Chairman Mao added the sentence: “We must frequently analyze and summarize, using Mao Zedong Thought, the new trends, new achievements, new experiences, and new problems that arise in the movement, and promptly educate the broad ranks of cadres and soldiers so that their thinking can continuously keep pace with the evolving situation.”

In the fourth paragraph, after the statement “that is, to use Mao Zedong Thought to unify people’s understanding of the situation,” he inserted the phrase “to expose the provocations and incitements of class enemies.”

In the sixth paragraph, following the sentence “The practice of the Proletarian Cultural Revolution has proved that as long as Mao Zedong Thought is combined with hundreds of millions of the masses,” he added the clause “with the exception of traitors, secret agents, incorrigible capitalist-roaders within the Party, and the monsters and demons of society (namely, the landlords, rich peasants, counter-revolutionaries, bad elements, and rightists who have not been properly remolded).”
