Mao Zedong
August 25

[1] This document, issued on August 25, 1967, by the Central Committee of the Communist
Party of China, the State Council, the Central Military Commission, and the Central Cultural
Revolution Group, stated that the Chinese People's Liberation Army is the great pillar of
national defense and the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. To advance the "Cultural
Revolution," it was necessary for the People's Liberation Army to unite more closely with all
proletarian revolutionaries, all Red Guards, and the revolutionary masses. It was necessary
for the military and civilians throughout the country to launch a nationwide, fervent
campaign to support the army and love the people. The document demanded that all parties
formulate new "Support the Army and Love the People" conventions based on the specific
conditions of the "Cultural Revolution" in their respective regions. These new conventions
must embody Chairman Mao's guiding principles on supporting the army and loving the
people.
