Immerse Ourselves in Work and Be Good at Thinking
(February 1967)
The outstanding figures of the May Fourth Movement, the influential ones — the right wing of the May Fourth Movement was Hu Shi, who later became a running dog of U.S. imperialism; Chen Duxiu of the May Fourth Movement also turned into a counter-revolutionary. At that time, Li Dazhao did not write many articles, but he immersed himself in work and later became a revolutionary of the left. There was also Lu Xun, who at that time valued social investigation and independent thinking, and later became a great Marxist. We must draw lessons from history and not become fleeting, short-lived figures. We must immerse ourselves in work, be good at thinking, and maintain close ties with the masses. In all the revolutions in Chinese history and the revolutions we have personally experienced, the truly hopeful people are those who can think, not those who seek the limelight. Those who now make a great clamor will certainly become fleeting, short-lived figures in history.
