Comrade Guan Feng: Don't quote them at all.
Mao Zedong
December 25

[1] On December 24, 1966, Guan Feng, a member of the Central Committee of the
Communist Party of China's Cultural Revolution Group and deputy editor-in-chief of Red Flag
magazine, wrote to Jiang Qing, deputy group leader of the Central Cultural Revolution
Group, stating, "Red Flag magazine's New Year's Day editorial quoted Chairman Mao's bigcharacter poster, 'Bombard the Headquarters.' It also quoted Chairman Mao's comments on
the People's Daily commentator's 'A Big-Character Poster Cheering for Peking University.'"
"Please consider whether it is appropriate to quote these words of Chairman Mao and
publish them publicly." Mao Zedong's comments were included in Guan Feng's letter. The
first issue of Red Flag magazine in 1967 published the People's Daily and Red Flag magazine's
New Year's Day editorial, "Carry the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution Through to the
End," which did not quote Mao Zedong's big-character poster or comments.
