Zhong Xuekun was originally a nurse at the Lushan Sanatorium. During the Lushan Conference, she provided health care services to Mao Zedong. Mao’s inscription was written in her diary.

Norman Bethune, a Canadian Communist and renowned physician, came to China in 1938 to assist in the War of Resistance Against Japan. He died in November 1939 from an infection contracted while performing emergency surgery on wounded soldiers.

Lei Feng was a squad leader in the transport company of the 10th Regiment of Engineer Troops under the Shenyang Military Region of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. He tragically died in the line of duty in August of that year.
