This comment was penned on Zhou Enlai’s draft article, submitted for review on February 14, 1965, intended for publication in the People’s Daily. The article, titled “Where Is the United Nations Heading? — A Commentary on General de Gaulle’s Speech,” argued that the majority of nations worldwide are dissatisfied with the current state of the United Nations. In his press conference on February 4, French President Charles de Gaulle criticized the UN, indicating that even within the North Atlantic bloc there are voices calling for an end to the situation where the United States effectively dominates the organization. Today, from East to West, calls for a thorough restructuring of the UN are growing louder, and various proposals have been put forward. Regardless of the specific plan, a common thread running through them all is the demand to put an end to U.S. control and manipulation of the UN. It has become the prevailing sentiment and the general trend of the times that the United Nations must correct its mistakes and undergo a complete overhaul. The article was published in the People’s Daily on February 15, 1965.
