The sanqu poem “Three Cries of a Certain Official” written by Zhao Puchu refers to: 1) Crying over Kennedy (November 1963); 2) Crying over Nikita Khrushchev (May 1964); and 3) Crying over himself (November 1964). It was published in the People’s Daily on February 1, 1965. “A Certain Official” refers to Khrushchev, “Kennedy” refers to John F. Kennedy, and “Nikita” refers to Nikita Khrushchev.

These comments were written on a report dated January 31, 1965, submitted by Kang Sheng, Secretary of the CPC Central Secretariat and Deputy Head of the Central Cultural and Educational Leading Group, to Mao Zedong regarding the publication of Zhao Puchu’s “Three Cries of a Certain Official.” The report stated that a proof copy of Zhao Puchu’s sanqu poem had been typeset. If deemed appropriate, it was proposed to publish it the following day. Yao Liao should handle its final approval tonight.
