We should absorb all good experiences and advanced science and technology from abroad and put them to good use. It is wrong to refuse to learn from other countries; equally wrong, however, is blind faith in foreign things, the notion that everything from abroad is inherently superior. Whether one blindly admires the Soviet Union or the West, such attitudes are misguided. The correct approach is to respect science and dispel superstition.

Introducing new technologies does not mean mere imitation or slavish copying. When learning from foreign sources, we must adopt a spirit of originality and adapt their methods to our own context. The introduction of foreign technology should always be coupled with independent research and development. With regard to imported equipment and technology, thorough study is essential. Typically, we begin by replicating these technologies, then gradually modify and improve them to suit China’s specific conditions.
