The Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution, preparations for which began in 1958, is one of the Ten Great Buildings of the capital presented as a gift for the tenth anniversary of National Day.

On March 12, 1959, with the approval of the Military Commission of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, it was officially named the Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution.

Internal previews began on October 1, 1959, and it was officially opened to the public on August 1, 1960, Army Day. Mao Zedong personally inscribed the museum name.
