Fang Zhimin, a native of Yiyang, Jiangxi Province, was one of the principal founders of the Min-Zhe-Gan Border Region and the Tenth Red Army.
In January 1935, he was captured while fighting against the Nationalist forces. In August of the same year, he heroically laid down his life in Nanchang, Jiangxi.

This note was written on a letter dated May 21, 1964, from Wang Zhuochao, Vice Governor of Jiangxi Province, to Wang Dongxing, Director of the Guard Bureau of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee. The letter requested that Chairman Mao inscribe the words “The Tomb of Martyr Fang Zhimin.” It further stated: “As to how many characters should be used and what they should be, please discuss this with the Chairman and make a decision after careful consideration.”
