I have long maintained that we must serve the working people—serve the workers, peasants, and soldiers—and I have been saying this for over two decades. Yet in practice, no concrete steps were ever taken to put it into action. As long as there is no concerted effort to enforce it, the status quo will remain unchanged: instead of serving the workers, peasants, and soldiers, and serving socialism, culture and the arts end up serving capitalism and feudalism. … The bourgeoisie has a firm grip on culture, the arts, education, and scholarship, and they are extremely resistant to change. Their people dominate these fields; ours are few and far between. This kind of situation may well emerge in your country within a few years.
