Wang Hairong, who was studying English at the Beijing Foreign Languages Institute, wrote a letter to Mao Zedong on September 28, 1964, expressing her views on the institute’s educational reforms. She stated: “There are still quite a few deviations and certain problems in some specific practices or measures of the reform. I believe that if these are not corrected promptly now, it will affect students’ comprehensive grasp of knowledge.”

Text One was written on the envelope of Wang Hairong’s letter; Text Two was written on the first page of the letter; Text Three was written beside the passage on the second page that described the problems existing in the foreign language institute’s educational reform.

Lu Dingyi was then a Secretary of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee.
