Comrade Zhou Yang:

I agree to use the method of photographic enlargement and offset printing. However, please note that the covers should not use hard paper; large books (such as *Materialism and Empirio-Criticism* and *Anti-Dühring*), which were previously customarily bound in one or two volumes, should now be divided into four or eight volumes to reduce the weight of each volume.

This comment was written on a request for instructions submitted to Mao Zedong by Zhou Yang, Deputy Director of the Propaganda Department of the CPC Central Committee.
Zhou Yang's report stated that the issue of stipulating a list of Marxist-Leninist-Stalinist classics for cadres to read had been discussed once at a meeting chaired by Comrade Lu Dingyi, and a preliminary list had been drawn up. It had now been sent to Chen Boda for review and would be reported to the Chairman after final discussion. Regarding the printing of large-character editions of the classics, the comrades in the publishing field were of the opinion that photographic enlargement and offset printing would be the best approach.
