Dear Mr. Cizai,

Both of your gracious letters have been received and read; I am most grateful. Regarding your esteemed illness, Comrade Zhou Dunyuan has already informed me, and I am deeply concerned. I am sending some modest gifts to assist with your medical treatment, and I hope you will kindly accept them.

Zhang Gan (1884-1967), courtesy name Cizai, served as the principal of the Hunan Provincial First Normal School when Mao Zedong was a student there.

Zhou Dunyuan, namely Zhou Shizhao, was a classmate of Mao Zedong at the Hunan Provincial First Normal School. At the time, he served as Vice Governor of Hunan Province.

Refers to 2,000 yuan in RMB forwarded through Zhou Shizhao.
