Letter to Zhou Shizhao [1]
(March 24, 1963)

Brother Beiyuan:

Your several kind letters of last year and this year, along with the attached poems, have all been received, and I am extremely pleased. I beg your understanding for my delayed reply due to busyness. As for the inscription for the school, the occasion has passed, so let us dispense with it. When you came to Beijing, I happened to be away and could not meet with you; I deeply regret this. Hereafter, should you have any observations or poetic works, I hope you will continue to share them with me at your convenience.

Mr. Zhang Gan [2], the old school principal (I have forgotten his courtesy name; is it Cilun?), sent me two letters to which I have not yet replied. He asked me to find a way to help his daughter return to Hunan for work so that she can care for him. I am currently handling this matter, but I do not know whether it can be accomplished. If it cannot, could we think of another way? Please find time to have a talk with Mr. Zhang to see whether he has any difficulties in his daily life and whether he needs any assistance. I would be obliged if you could inform me of the results of your conversation. When you see Brother Jiang Zhuru [4], please also convey my regards on my behalf. I have received all the letters he sent me.

With best regards and wishes for your well-being.
