--- Notes

This inscription was written by Mao Zedong in February 1963 at the request of the magazine China Youth for a special issue on learning from Lei Feng. It was first published in the March 2 issue of China Youth that year and subsequently appeared in the People’s Daily on March 5. Lei Feng was a squad leader in the transport company of the 10th Regiment of Engineering Troops under the Shenyang Military Region of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, who tragically died in the line of duty in August 1962.
