The Records of the Grand Historian, originally titled The Book of the Grand Scribe, was compiled by Sima Qian during the Western Han dynasty.
It comprises a total of 130 volumes and constitutes China’s first comprehensive historical work written in the biographical–chronological style.
The “new edition of the Records of the Grand Historian” refers to the newly collated and punctuated edition published by the Zhonghua Book Company in 1959.
