Telegram Greeting Comrade Nosaka Sanzo[1] on His 70th Birthday
Central Committee of the Japanese Communist Party
Dear Comrade Nosaka Sanzo:
(March 28, 1962)

You are a tried and tested, staunch and unyielding fighter of the Japanese people and the Japanese Communist Party, and a close friend of the Chinese people and the Chinese Communist Party. In my own name, I extend warm congratulations on your glorious 70th birthday!

During the Second World War, the Chinese people waged an arduous struggle to resist the Japanese aggressors. At that time, you journeyed from afar to Yan'an and joined us. Representing the interests of the Japanese people and the will of the Japanese Communist Party, you held that the Japanese aggressors were the enemy of the Chinese people and, at the same time, the enemy of the Japanese people themselves, and that Japanese militarism had brought immense calamity upon the Japanese people. You unceasingly exposed the true face of the dark rule of Japanese militarism and pointed out the path the Japanese people should follow. The political commentaries you wrote in those days educated the Japanese people and also helped the Chinese people in their fight.

After the conclusion of the Second World War, you returned to your homeland and, together with the other leaders of the Japanese Communist Party, held high the banner of Marxism-Leninism, the banner of internationalism and patriotism, and carried out tremendous work and a protracted struggle to unite the Japanese people, oppose the American occupiers, cast off the shackles imposed on the Japanese nation by the U.S. imperialists, and oppose the revival of Japanese militarism.

Nosaka Sanzo, then Chairman of the Central Committee of the Japanese Communist Party.

U.S. imperialism is the common enemy of the Japanese people and the Chinese people. In the struggle against this common enemy, the unity of the Chinese and Japanese peoples has grown, and the friendship between the Chinese and Japanese peoples has deepened. The people are the creators of history. We are convinced that U.S. imperialism and its lackeys, who resolutely treat the people as their enemy, will ultimately meet their defeat.

The Japanese nation is a great nation. No matter how many twists and turns and difficulties it may still encounter on its path forward, the Japanese people will ultimately win victory, and the just cause upheld by the Japanese Communist Party and Japanese patriots will ultimately win victory.

On the occasion of your 70th birthday, I wish you well, and I also wish the Japanese people well.

With fraternal salutations!

Mao Zedong
