I was once startled by the autumn chill descending upon the world,
And hastened to chase the spring warmth onto my tongue's tip.
The vast sea of dust, boundless and obscure, drowns a hundred emotions;
The golden wind, bleak and soughing, sees high officials take flight.
Joyfully scaling the winged bird, my whole body turns warm;
Bitterly plunging through the empty clouds, half my frame grows cold.
Shuddering, I hear them boast of their own sacred deeds;
Looking up, I see the enemy's flames now spreading wild and rampant.

Lu Xun
(1881–1936), a native of Shaoxing, Zhejiang. Originally named Zhou Shuren, courtesy name Yucai. This poem by Lu Xun is "An Occasional Composition in the Late Autumn of the Year of the Pig."
