(November 17, 1961)

Once the wind and clouds rise from the earth,
Then spirits are born from piles of white bones.
Monks are a worry, the common people are still teachable,
Demons are a ghostly realm, they will surely become a disaster.
The whole monkey rises up with a thousand-pound cudgel,
The jade sky is cleared of ten thousand miles of dust.
Today we cheer for the Great Sage Sun,
Only because the demonic fog has returned again.

In October 1961, the Shaoxing Opera Troupe of Zhejiang Province performed the Shaoxing Opera "Sun Wukong Thrice Beats the White Bone Demon" in Beijing, adapted from the story of the White Bone Demon in the twenty-seventh chapter of "Journey to the West." After watching the play, Guo Moruo wrote a poem to oppose what was then called modern revisionism. The main theme of this poem is the same as Guo's poem (which is also the theme of most of Mao Zedong's poems and lyrics thereafter), but it disagrees with Guo's view of being hostile to Tang Seng, who was deceived by the White Bone Demon. After reading this poem, Guo expressed his acceptance of Mao Zedong's opinion. Guo Moruo (1892-1978), a native of Leshan, Sichuan, was a famous modern writer and historian. The two poems use many stories from "Journey to the West" because they are widely circulated, so no annotations are added now.

Seven-Character律诗·Watching "Sun Wukong Thrice Beats the White Bone Demon"

Humans and demons reverse right and wrong,
Compassionate to the enemy, harsh to friends.
The incantation of the golden hoop is heard ten thousand times,
The spirit escapes, the White Bone Demon is chased three times.
A thousand cuts should be used to slice Tang Seng's flesh,
What loss is it to pluck a hair from the Great Sage?
Timely education is commendable,
The pig's cry is even wiser than Cao Cao.
