Seven. A Verse Inscribed for Comrade Li Jin [1] on Her Photograph of the Immortal Cave on Mount Lu [2] (September 9, 1961) In the dimming twilight I gaze upon the sturdy pines; Amidst the swirling clouds they remain serene. Nature has fashioned a cave for immortals— Its boundless beauty lies within those perilous peaks. Printed from Selected Poems of Mao Zedong, published by the People’s Literature Publishing House in September 1986. Originally appeared in Poems of Chairman Mao, published by the People’s Literature Publishing House in December 1963. (Includes Mao’s handwritten draft.) Notes [1] Li Jin refers to Jiang Qing. [2] The Immortal Cave is located beneath Buddha’s Hand Rock on Mount Lu, west of Guling. It stands about six meters high and measures roughly ten feet in both depth and width. Legend has it that the Tang-dynasty immortal Lü Dongbin once dwelt here, hence its name.
