Comrade Tian Jiaying:
Please take a look. If it is generally usable, return it to Comrade Lin Biao for handling.

Mao Zedong
August 29

Based on the manuscript.

Notes
〔1〕 Lin Biao, Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the CPC Central Committee, wrote a report to Mao Zedong on August 29, 1961, stating: "The vast numbers of soldiers in the army ardently love and urgently demand to read Chairman Mao's works, but due to a shortage of books and their lack of skill in selecting the necessary articles to read, in order to solve this problem, the General Political Department has selected a portion of articles from the *Selected Works of Mao Zedong* and plans to print and distribute them to the companies to meet practical needs. However, it is uncertain whether the selected articles and chapters are appropriate, and we hope the Chairman will assign relevant personnel to review them. If there are any opinions, please provide instructions; if there are no instructions, the General Political Department will proceed with publication." In the same year, the Propaganda Department of the General Political Department compiled and printed the book *Selected Readings from Mao Zedong's Works*, distributing it to squads, with two copies per squad, for soldiers to study.

〔2〕 Tian Jiaying, then Deputy Director of the Political Research Office of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary to Mao Zedong.
