Comments on Yang朔’s “Cherry Blossom Rain” [1] (April 1961): Read by Jiang Qing; a fine article. Returned to Mao after reading. Printed from Mao Zedong’s handwritten draft. Note [1]: “Cherry Blossom Rain” is a travelogue written in Japan by the renowned essayist and member of the Executive Committee of the Chinese Writers Association, Yang朔. It was published on page eight of the April 29, 1961, issue of the People’s Daily. The essay likens the presence of U.S. forces in Japan to the stormy winds and rains that ravage cherry blossoms, while comparing the Japanese people to those very blossoms, which continue to bloom despite such adversity. Mao Zedong’s comments were written beside the title of this article.
