[2] This excerpt was compiled by Chen Boda, alternate member of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau and Mao Zedong’s secretary. Its contents are as follows: (1) In 1958, each agricultural worker in the United States, on average, supplied agricultural products sufficient to meet the consumption needs of thirty persons. (2) In the same year, agricultural labor in the United Kingdom provided 50 percent of the nation’s total agricultural output; on average, each worker had to supply the consumption needs of 26.7 persons. (3) Also in 1958, each agricultural worker in the Soviet Union, on average, bore the burden of supplying the consumption needs of 6.4 persons.
