Comments on a Summary of Montgomery’s[1] Speech at the De La Rue Company Banquet[2]
(June 1960)

To be read by Comrade Jiang Qing.

We should study why he said these things.

1. During his time in China, he saw that the Chinese civilization, which has endured for several thousand years, has only been advanced and not harmed under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party. The revolution has been beneficial to China. Corruption, degeneracy, local ruffians, hooligans, and foreign devils have all been driven out. Of course, blood was shed, which cannot but be said to be a regrettable matter, but it seems there was no other way without bloodshed.
2. He once told Mao Zedong that the revolution caused many people to lose their heads; although this certainly cannot be considered a good thing, it is not entirely a bad thing either. For this, Mao Zedong called him an enlightened British marshal.
3. The Chinese leaders he met are all learned and very wise. The Western claim that Chinese leaders know very little about the world is incorrect. He recommended that all those present at the banquet read Mao Zedong’s writings on war.
4. After visiting socialist countries such as the Soviet Union and China, he drew two conclusions: first, since the Western countries have no way to eliminate communism, they must find a way to coexist with communism; second, while coexisting, the Western countries must make every effort to preserve the foundation of their own Christian civilization and carry it forward.
