Seven-Character Octave: Thoughts on Reading the Newspapers I
(1959)

I recall the anti-Soviet croaking of frogs in days gone by,
Today I rejoice to see the great hue and cry against China.
Malevolent demons, their hearts consumed with hate, whip up a raucous clamor,
Baleful fiends, their mouths agape, belch smoke and haze.
In this Divine Land, is there only a thousandfold evil?
In this Red Realm, were myriad vices always hidden?
Scan the globe for all aggressors —
Only this one lonely monarch remains here.
