New Year Greetings from Mao Zedong et al. to the Leaders of the Communist Party and State of the Soviet Union (December 30, 1959) Comrade Nikita S. Khrushchev, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR; Comrade Kliment Y. Voroshilov, Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR: As the New Year approaches, on our own behalf and on behalf of the Chinese people, the Communist Party of China, and the Government of the People’s Republic of China, we extend to you, and through you to the great Soviet people, our warm fraternal congratulations. With profound admiration, the Chinese people have observed that, over the past year, under the leadership of the glorious Communist Party of the Soviet Union and its Central Committee headed by Comrade Khrushchev, the brotherly Soviet people have achieved tremendous successes in implementing the grand Seven-Year Plan for the transition to communism, and have made outstanding contributions to the tireless struggle for the attainment and maintenance of lasting world peace. All of this has greatly strengthened the might of our socialist camp, dealt a severe blow to the nefarious plots of the warmongering imperialists, and immensely encouraged the confidence of peace-loving nations and peoples throughout the world in their fight for lasting world peace.

Over the past year, the deep friendship and comprehensive cooperation between the peoples of China and the Soviet Union have been further consolidated and developed. The Chinese people express their heartfelt gratitude to the Soviet people for the immense assistance they have rendered to China’s socialist construction. The close solidarity between the Chinese and Soviet peoples serves their fundamental interests and constitutes a reliable guarantee of human progress and world peace. The Chinese people will continue to spare no effort in developing the fraternal friendship and cooperation between the two peoples and in safeguarding the unity of the socialist camp led by the Soviet Union. We sincerely wish you and the great Soviet people, in the new year, still greater and more brilliant achievements in accelerating the building of communism and in the sacred cause of defending world peace. Dear comrades, we wish you a happy New Year and robust health.
