Comments on Chen Boda’s Article “The Struggle Between the Bourgeois Worldview and the Proletarian Worldview” [1] (October 11 and 16, 1959)

Notes [1] Chen Boda was at that time an alternate member of the CPC Central Political Bureau, Director of the Central Political Research Office, and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Red Flag. [2] Parts (I) and (II) are comments on the revised draft of this article submitted for review by Chen Boda on October 9, 1959; Part (III) is a comment on the revised draft submitted on October 13. [3] Kang Sheng was then an alternate member of the CPC Central Political Bureau and Deputy Head of the Central Cultural and Educational Leading Group.
Qiao Mu refers to Hu Qiaomu, who at the time served as an alternate secretary of the CPC Central Secretariat and as Mao Zedong’s secretary. [4] The original title of Chen Boda’s article was “Please Look at Comrade Peng Dehuai’s Political Appearance.”
On Chen Boda’s submission of October 9, Mao Zedong changed the title to “The Bourgeois Worldview or the Proletarian Worldview.”
The article was later retitled “The Struggle Between the Proletarian Worldview and the Bourgeois Worldview” and published in the 22nd issue of Red Flag for 1959.
On December 13, 1959, the CPC Central Committee also circulated this article to party committees at all levels. [5] Zhou refers to Zhou Enlai.
Zhu refers to Zhu De.
Lin refers to Lin Biao, who at the time held the posts of Vice Chairman of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council. [6] Shangkun refers to Yang Shangkun, who at the time was an alternate secretary of the CPC Central Secretariat and Director of the Central Office.
