Commentary on the Beijing Municipal Party Committee’s Report on the Flood Disaster in the Suburbs and Rescue Efforts〔1〕 (August 1959) A Major Issue. Reviewed by Jiang Qing. Heavy rains have caused a sharp decline in vegetable supplies. Printed from Mao Zedong’s handwritten draft. Note 〔1〕 Refers to the second report submitted by the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee to the Central Committee and to Mao Zedong on August 14, 1959, concerning the flood disaster in the Beijing suburbs and the ongoing rescue operations. The report stated that following the torrential rain on August 6, another heavy downpour struck the Beijing area on the 13th, severely damaging vegetable fields in the suburban areas. As a result, the volume of vegetables reaching the market has been steadily decreasing over the past few days, leading to a very tight supply. It is expected that the availability of vegetables will continue to dwindle for some time to come. At present, efforts are being made on all fronts to find ways to increase supply.
