Letter to Khrushchev [I]
(August 17 and 21, 1959)

Request the Premier to forward to Comrade Chen Yi [2] for handling.

Dear Comrade Khrushchev:

Mao Zedong
August 17

Your letter to me dated August 7, along with the attached copies of the correspondence exchanged between you and Eisenhower [3], has been forwarded to me by the Soviet Embassy in China. I am very grateful for this notification from you. That the United States, under compulsion, has been forced to invite you for a visit represents yet another major victory for the Soviet Union’s peaceful foreign policy.

[1] Khrushchev, then First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR.
[2] Chen Yi, then Vice Premier of the State Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
[3] Eisenhower, then President of the United States.

Volume 42 of the Complete Works of Mao Zedong

I am deeply convinced that your forthcoming visit to the United States will inevitably place the American warmongers in an even more passive position. I wish you new and even greater successes in the struggle to ease international tensions.

With communist salutations!

Mao Zedong
