Yesterday’s talk was most pleasant. Please write down for me in written form all the circumstances and opinions discussed yesterday. I hope it can be delivered to me today; if not, tomorrow will also do. Hand it to my secretary, Comrade Gao Zhi.

At 2 a.m. on August 13, 1959, Zhou Xiaozhou, following the instruction, wrote a long letter to Mao Zedong. On August 14, Mao Zedong issued instructions to print and distribute this letter to all comrades of the Eighth Central Committee’s Eighth Plenary Session.
