These three documents are to be circulated among all comrades. When printing, please ensure that Khrushchev’s article (together with a New York dispatch from the Central News Agency) is placed first. The three items should be printed as a single set. Comrades are asked to study them carefully and determine whether the communes that once collapsed in the Soviet Union are the same as our People’s Communes. They should also consider whether our People’s Communes will ultimately collapse. If they are destined to collapse, what factors would bring about their downfall? And if they are not destined to collapse, what explains their resilience? Anything that does not meet the demands of history is bound to fail; it cannot be kept afloat by artificial means. Conversely, anything that accords with the requirements of history cannot be made to fail—nor can it be destroyed by deliberate dissolution. This is a fundamental principle of historical materialism. I urge you to read Marx’s Preface to A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy. Lately, those who have been attacking the People’s Communes have been invoking this very scientific principle of Marx as a magic weapon to strike at us. Are you not at all apprehensive about this “magic weapon”?
