Commentary on the Report Concerning the Joint Statement Between India and Nepal [1] (June 1959) Nepal is dissatisfied with India’s control over it. Here, the Indian side appears to have made a concession in order to keep Nepal onside. [2] Printed from Mao Zedong’s manuscript. Notes [1] Refers to the first news report titled “Report from New Delhi: The Joint Statement Between India and Nepal,” published in Issue No. 2935 of Xinhua News Agency’s Reference Materials, compiled on June 16, 1959. The report outlined the main contents of the joint statement issued by the Prime Minister of India and the Prime Minister of Nepal in Kathmandu on June 14, 1959. [2] The joint statement between India and Nepal stated: “The Prime Minister and the Prime Minister also expressed their firm belief that, in the interests of peace and for the progress of nations and of mankind, no country should be subjected to the domination or colonial control of another country, and that all such forms of domination must come to an end.” Next to this passage, Mao Zedong wrote the above commentary.
