Comments on Two Reports by an Indian News Agency About the Rebellion in Tibet

(April 7, 1959)

Forward immediately to Premier Zhou for review.

These two reports by this news agency[1] are unfavorable to Nehru.[2] I believe they can be published in full.[3]

Please consult with Wu Lengxi.[4]

[1] Refers to the two reports carried in *Reference Materials* (No. 2792), compiled and printed by the Xinhua News Agency on April 5, 1959: "Indian News Agency Reports on the Situation of the Rebellion in Tibet" and "Indian News Agency Correspondent Reports on Tibetan Traitors' Accounts of Years of Preparations for Launching the Rebellion." Beside the table of contents listing these two reports, Mao Zedong also wrote the notation "Can be reviewed."

[2] Nehru was then serving as Prime Minister of the Indian government.

[3] On April 23, 1959, *Renmin Ribao* (*People's Daily*) reprinted the second report by the Indian news agency under the title "Facts Provided by the Indian News Agency Once Again Confirm That Kalimpong Is a Center of Conspiratorial Activities Against Tibet."

[4] Wu Lengxi was then serving as Director of the Xinhua News Agency and Editor-in-Chief of *Renmin Ribao*.

The character "向" (xiàng) appears to be a typographical error for "从" (cóng); the report was dispatched from Kalimpong.[1]

[1] The report "Indian News Agency Reports on the Situation of the Rebellion in Tibet," carried in *Reference Materials* (No. 2792) by the Xinhua News Agency, stated: "A correspondent of the Indian News Agency reported from Kalimpong yesterday." Beside this passage, Mao Zedong wrote this comment. Kalimpong is a city on the northern border of India.
