Reply upon Receiving Credentials from the Newly Appointed Ambassador of the Union of Burma to China, U Maung Maung Kyaw Win

(March 12, 1959)

Chairman Mao Zedong stated in his reply: "China and Burma have been close neighbors since ancient times. In the long struggle against colonialism and for national independence, the peoples of our two countries have forged a profound friendship. Since each country successively freed itself from colonial oppression, the friendship established on a new foundation between our two peoples has continuously developed. I am deeply convinced that, with both China and Burma resolutely upholding the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, the friendly and cooperative relations between the peoples of China and Burma will surely be further consolidated and strengthened in the future, thereby making even greater contributions to peace in Asia and the world."
