Revised Title (Abstract) and Commentary on Dulles’ Remarks Criticizing China’s People’s Communes (November 1958) I. Dulles has criticized China’s people’s communes. He has been preaching to Asians about the evils of communism and the benefits of capitalism. Dulles has expounded at length on his own political economy, expressing his alarm at China’s Great Leap Forward. II. This document is to be circulated by Deng Xiaoping. Printed from Mao Zedong’s manuscript. Notes 1. Dulles was then the U.S. Secretary of State. 2. This is the title Mao Zedong rewrote for distribution at the Sixth Plenary Session of the Eighth CPC Central Committee, concerning Dulles’ speech before the Seattle Chamber of Commerce. The full text of Dulles’ speech appeared in Issue No. of “Reference Materials,” compiled and published by Xinhua News Agency on November 14, 1958, under the heading: “Dulles Delivers a Speech Before the Seattle Chamber of Commerce, Launching a Fierce Attack and Slander Against Our System of Collective Labor and Commune Building, While Energetically Promoting Capitalism’s ‘Freedom’ and ‘Happiness’ in an Effort to Counteract the Impact of China’s Great Achievements in Asia.” 3. Deng Xiaoping was then General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee.
