Telegram on the Fourteenth Anniversary of Liberation
(August 22, 1958)

To Comrade Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Romanian Workers’ Party;
To Comrade Ion G. Maiorescu, President of the Great National Assembly of the Romanian People’s Republic and Chairman of the Presidium;
To Comrade Chivu Stoica, Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Romanian People’s Republic:

On the occasion of the fourteenth anniversary of Romania’s liberation, on behalf of the Government and the people of the People’s Republic of China, we extend to the Government and the people of the Romanian People’s Republic our fraternal and warmest congratulations.

We are delighted to note that, over the past fourteen years since its liberation, under the wise leadership of the Romanian Workers’ Party and the Government of the Romanian People’s Republic, the Romanian people have embarked upon a vast socialist construction drive and have achieved splendid successes. Ever faithful to the great principles of proletarian internationalism, the Romanian people have made outstanding contributions to strengthening the solid unity of the socialist camp led by the Soviet Union. In international affairs, the Romanian People’s Republic has consistently pursued a peaceful foreign policy, developed friendly relations with all peoples, and resolutely fought against the threat of war, against aggression, and in defense of peace in Europe and throughout the world.

In recent years, our two countries have enjoyed close cooperation in the political, economic, cultural, and scientific-technological fields. Not long ago, we concluded a long-term trade agreement, which marks a further deepening of the fraternal friendship between our two peoples.

We wish the Romanian People’s Republic ever greater prosperity and strength.
We hope that the fraternal friendship between the Chinese and Romanian peoples will be further consolidated and strengthened.

Mao Zedong,
Chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China
and
President of the People’s Republic of China

Liu Shaoqi,
Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China

Zhou Enlai,
Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China
