Reply Speech at the Presentation of Credentials
(July 28, 1958)

Chairman Mao Zedong delivered the following reply:

“China and India have enjoyed a time-honored friendship that has been cherished through the ages. We are greatly pleased to note that, since both countries achieved liberation and independence and established diplomatic relations, this profound traditional friendship has, through the joint efforts of our two governments and peoples, attained new and significant developments. The continuous strengthening of the friendly and cooperative relations between China and India not only serves the interests of our two peoples, but also constitutes a powerful force for safeguarding and consolidating peace in Asia and throughout the world.

“Both China and India are peace-loving nations. India’s endeavors and contributions to the cause of peace have always been held in high esteem by the Chinese people. The Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, jointly advocated by China and India, have already exerted a tremendous influence worldwide. At present, however, international peace is gravely threatened by the aggression of colonial powers against Western Asia. I am firmly convinced that China and India will henceforth raise even higher the banner of the Five Principles and make their due efforts to uphold peace in Asia and the world.

“Mr. Ambassador, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of India to the People’s Republic of China. In your work to develop the friendly cooperation between China and India and to defend world peace, the Government of the People’s Republic of China and I personally shall extend our full assistance and support.”
