Reply upon Accepting the Letters of Credence from Mr. Patailaswamy, Ambassador of India to China (July 28, 1958) Chairman Mao Zedong delivered the following reply: “China and India have enjoyed a time-honored friendship since ancient times.
We are delighted to note that, since both countries achieved liberation and independence respectively and established diplomatic relations, this profound traditional friendship has, through the joint efforts of our two governments and peoples, attained new and significant developments.
The continuous strengthening of the friendly cooperative relations between China and India not only serves the interests of our two peoples, but also constitutes a powerful force for safeguarding and consolidating peace in Asia and the world.”
“Both China and India are peace-loving nations.
India’s endeavors and contributions to the cause of peace have always been highly esteemed by the Chinese people.
The Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, jointly advocated by China and India, have already exerted a tremendous influence throughout the world.
At present, due to the aggression of colonialists against West Asia, international peace is under serious threat.
I am firmly convinced that China and India will surely hold high the banner of the Five Principles and make their due efforts to uphold peace in Asia and the world.”
“Mr. Ambassador, I warmly welcome your appointment as the Special and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of India to the People’s Republic of China.
In your work to develop friendly cooperation between China and India and to defend world peace, both my government and I personally shall

render full assistance and support.” Printed according to the news report published in the People’s Daily on July 29, 1958.
