Letter to Zhou Gucheng [1] (July 28, 1958) Brother Gucheng: I have received both your warm letters and am very grateful!
Your important work [2] has now been published, which I look forward to reading with pleasure.
As for logic, I have not studied it much and therefore dare not offer any comments; moreover, the issue is still under debate [3], so it would perhaps be inappropriate for me to intervene.
Regarding writing a preface, I do not intend to accept this request—may you kindly understand?
With respectful greetings.
Mao Zedong July 28, 1958 Printed from the manuscript.

Notes [1] Zhou Gucheng was at that time a professor in the Department of History at Fudan University. [2] Refers to Zhou Gucheng’s book “The Question of Formal Logic and Dialectics.” [3] Refers to the debate then mainly taking place between Ma Te and Zhou Gucheng concerning the relationship between formal logic and dialectics. £³ ０
