The article by Qian Xuesen has been received. Printed from the manuscript.

Notes [1] Dong Biwu was at the time a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and was leading the CPC delegation to the Fifth National Congress of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany.

[2] Walter Ulbricht was then First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany.

[3] Dingyi refers to Lu Dingyi, who at the time served as head of the CPC Central Committee’s Cultural and Educational Leading Group and Minister of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee.

[4] This refers to Dong Biwu’s telegram dated July 13, 1958, to the CPC Central Committee concerning the main points of his conversation with Ulbricht and our party delegation.

The passage under “[ ]” in Dong Biwu’s telegram to the CPC Central Committee, section (3) of the main points of the conversation with Ulbricht and our delegation, reads: “About half a year ago, the CPC Central Committee sent a letter to all primary-level organizations, calling for the study of dialectical materialism. The response following the issuance of the letter was very positive. Members of agricultural cooperatives, at Party meetings, ably analyzed their work from the standpoint of dialectical materialism and shared experiences on how to apply the dialectical method in practice.” Mao Zedong drew a wavy line beneath this passage and wrote: “Pay attention.”
