Commentary on Typographical Errors in the First Issue of Hongqi Magazine
(June 4, 1958)
Comrade Chen Boda:
On page 4, line 3, there is an extra “de” character. There may be other typographical errors in the other articles as well. A list of corrections should be prepared and published in the next issue.

The first issue of Hongqi Magazine featured Mao Zedong’s article “Introducing a Cooperative,” which stated: “Big-character posters are an extremely useful new weapon. They can be used in cities, villages, factories, cooperatives, stores, government organs, schools, military units, and streets—in short, wherever there are masses. Those places where they have already been widely adopted should continue to use them indefinitely.” In this latter sentence, an extra “de” character was inadvertently duplicated.

The third issue of Hongqi Magazine, published on July 1, 1958, included a “Correction” section that rectified several typographical errors found in the first and second issues. Among these was the superfluous “de” character in Mao Zedong’s article “Introducing a Cooperative.”
