Inscriptions for the Masthead of “Red Flag” Magazine [1] (May 24, 1958) To Comrade Bo Da [2]: I have drafted several versions of the masthead; please review them. If none are suitable, I will try again. Mao Zedong, morning of May 24, printed from the manuscript. 2. This style was inspired by the Red Silk Dance and depicts a red flag. 3. It conveys a sense of composure. Printed from Mao Zedong’s manuscript. Notes [1] This entry comprises three annotations written by Mao Zedong when he inscribed mastheads for “Red Flag” Magazine. (1) is written on a separate sheet of white paper, while (2) and (3) are respectively inscribed beside two of his “Red Flag” characters. Mao Zedong produced over twenty different inscriptions for the magazine’s masthead, from which two characters were ultimately selected to serve as the official masthead of “Red Flag” Magazine. [2] Bo Da refers to Chen Boda, who at the time held the positions of Director of the Central Committee’s Political Research Office and Editor-in-Chief of the forthcoming “Red Flag” Magazine.
