This is a title drafted by Mao Zedong for the purpose of circulating a passage from Volume III of Marx’s Capital that discusses commodity exchange. The relevant passage reads: “The initial theoretical examination of the preceding mode of production—mercantilism—inevitably begins with the phenomena appearing in the circulation process and in its independent form as the movement of commercial capital; hence it grasps only an external aspect. Partly because, during the earliest stages of transformation of feudal production—that is, at the dawn of modern production—commercial capital once exerted an all-dominating influence. The true science of modern economics commences when theoretical investigation shifts from the circulation process to the production process.”

This is another title drafted by Mao Zedong for the publication of the essay “Economic and Financial Problems During the War of Resistance” from Volume III of Selected Works of Mao Zedong. “Economic and Financial Problems During the War of Resistance” constitutes the first chapter of Mao Zedong’s report “Economic and Financial Problems,” delivered in December 1942 at the Conference of Senior Cadres in the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region.
