Comrades Liu Jianxun and Wei Guoqing: I am sending you several local newspapers, each with its own distinctive features. They are well laid out, engaging to read, and contain good content—please find them useful as reference.
The issue of the provincial newspaper is an extremely important one, deserving serious study. You should work together with the editors of the Guangxi Daily, covering all aspects such as page design, news reporting, editorials, theoretical articles, and literary and artistic contributions.
By delving deeply into the matter, thinking it through repeatedly, conducting thorough analysis, and making careful comparisons with newspapers from other provinces, we can, within a few months, identify a viable path forward.
Crafting high-quality editorials is an exceptionally important task. You yourselves, the Minister of Propaganda, the Secretary-General, and the Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper must collaborate in its study.
It is necessary for the First Secretary to take personal charge and personally revise some of the most crucial editorials.
A single provincial newspaper wields tremendous power in organizing, inspiring, encouraging, critically assessing, and advancing the work of the entire province and the people as a whole.
Please give this matter your consideration and let me know your thoughts. Mao Zedong, 7:00 a.m., January 12, 1958. Printed according to the Selected Letters of Mao Zedong, published by the People’s Publishing House in 1983.
Note [1]: Liu Jianxun (1913–1983), from Cang County, Hebei Province, was at that time First Secretary of the CPC Guangxi Provincial Committee. Wei Guoqing (1913–1989), from Donglan County, Guangxi, was then Secretary of the CPC Guangxi Provincial Committee Secretariat and Governor of Guangxi Province.
