Reply on the Occasion of Accepting the Letters of Credence from Ambassador Sándor Nogrády of Hungary (May 17, 1957) It gives me great pleasure to accept the letters of credence by which you have been appointed as the Plenipotentiary and Extraordinary Ambassador of the People’s Republic of Hungary to the People’s Republic of China, and I express my heartfelt thanks for your congratulations. The hardworking, courageous Hungarian people, with their glorious revolutionary traditions, have achieved significant successes in socialist construction and in the cause of safeguarding peace during the twelve years since their liberation. Not long ago, imperialist aggressor forces and Hungarian reactionaries, exploiting the widespread discontent among the people over mistakes made by the previous leadership, hatched a counter-revolutionary plot aimed at overthrowing Hungary’s socialist system. However, under the leadership of the Hungarian Socialist Workers’ Party and the Worker–Peasant Revolutionary Government, and with the internationalist assistance of the Soviet Union, the Hungarian people utterly crushed this counter-revolutionary conspiracy. This great victory of the Hungarian people not only defended Hungary’s people’s democratic regime and the socialist cause, but also made an enormous contribution to the entire socialist camp and to world peace. The Hungarian Socialist Workers’ Party and the Worker–Peasant Revolutionary Government have made tremendous efforts and attained remarkable achievements in uniting all democratic forces led by the working class, in exercising the dictatorship of the proletariat, and in restoring the national economy.

I am firmly convinced that the Hungarian people will surely overcome all difficulties and continue to advance along the bright and prosperous socialist road. The Chinese people have always closely followed and deeply sympathized with the Hungarian people’s struggle to build socialism and defend peace, rejoicing in their victories as if they were their own. In their fight to uphold and develop socialism, the Hungarian people can always count on the sincere support of six hundred million Chinese. The Hungarian people, for their part, have consistently provided multifaceted assistance to China’s socialist construction, for which the Chinese people express their heartfelt gratitude. In recent years, the fraternal friendship between our two peoples and their mutual cooperation in political, economic, and cultural fields have grown considerably. The continued strengthening of this brotherly and friendly relationship is not only conducive to the prosperity and happiness of our two nations, but will also reinforce the socialist family headed by the great Soviet Union and the forces of peace and democracy throughout the world. Comrade Ambassador, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to your post as the Plenipotentiary and Extraordinary Ambassador of the People’s Republic of Hungary to the People’s Republic of China. In your work to further develop and consolidate the friendly cooperation between China and Hungary, you may rest assured of my full support and that of the Government of the People’s Republic of China. I wish you every success in your mission. Printed in the People’s Daily, May 18, 1957.
