Comments on the Draft Directive Regarding Participation in Manual Labor⑴

Boda⑵ has reviewed it; Xiaoping should handle its implementation. After approval by the Politburo, insert the date and publish it in the newspaper.

There are some revisions on page four.
[1] This note was written on the draft of the CPC Central Committee’s Directive on Leading Cadres at All Levels Participating in Manual Labor. Following discussion and adoption by the CPC Central Politburo, Mao Zedong added another endorsement on May 11, which is this second note.
[2] Boda refers to Chen Boda, who at that time served as Director of the CPC Central Research Office and as Mao Zedong’s secretary.
[3] Xiaoping refers to Deng Xiaoping, who at that time held the post of General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee.
[4] On May 11, 1957, when Mao Zedong reviewed the directive draft again, he set the document’s date as “May 10, 1957.”
[5] On the fourth page of the draft directive, Mao Zedong made only a few minor textual corrections.
